Janis Sander

Few gifts leave a lasting mark on an entire community. Through her generosity and deep love for Dundee, Janis Sander made sure that the land her family farmed for generations would continue serving the town she called home. The former Sander family farm, once filled with prunes, hazelnuts, berries, and a thriving nursery, has been transformed into Sander Estate. This is a place where future generations can gather, play, and connect in Dundee.

Janis’ legacy is not only preserved in the land itself, but in the community space it is becoming.

The wine barrel art that represents Janis Sander’s story is located in Sander Estate. The barrels were hand-painted by local artist Kat Stauffer.

Artist Statement

There's a phrase I think of often: "Let our ceiling be their floor."

In essence, go as far as you can with your passions and abilities and let that energy fuel and raise up the next generation to do the same.

With The Dundee Wine Barrel Project, I was inspired by the way Janis Sander tended to new beginnings in our city. From her family's strong orchard legacy to the parcel of land she donated toward the building of Sander Estate Park, the foundation of creating solid beginnings is carried on, even after her passing.

I created pieces that bring to life this idea and pay homage to the parallel process of butterflies, bees and other pollinators titled, "Fractals from the Pollinators Perspective".

If you've never seen a photo of what these tiny pollinators see, it's quite impressive. The many lenses of their eyes follow all that are bright and attractive to them. Staying true to following the glimmers they see not only supports their species' stability but brings the start of life to many environments around them.

Nature following their natural tendencies towards the colors they see is the necessary first step in growing beauty and fruit in this Valley.

May you be reminded that a new perspective has the power to change everything. We may experience the same moment together on the surface, but taking the time through intentional relationship and consideration, we can expand our inner perspective, grow as humans and enrich ourselves and the community in the process.
